5 The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” 6 And the Lord said, “If you had faith like a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and be planted in the sea’; and it would obey you. // Luke 17:5-6

The disciples asked the Lord to increase their faith. The Lord answered in a way that probably surprised them. He told them that they did not need to worry so much about how big and impressive their faith was, but rather they needed to focus on how big their God was. The mustard seed was the smallest seed they knew of (Jesus knew of others, but He used one with which they would be familiar). Even that little faith, if applied in prayer to the Lord, could accomplish things that would bring them great surprises.

  • Pray and ask God for faith to believe He can do the impossible.
  • One way to increase your faith is to exercise the spiritual discipline of fasting. You can fast (give up) for one meal, or one day, or more, using some of that time in prayer you would normally spend eating.
  • Ask God to do impossible things like causing your relatives and friends to become believers in Jesus (pray for them by name), healing impossible relationships, turning away evil influences from the Northshore, etc.
  • Praise Him that He is so mighty and can do anything He decides to do.
  • Are there people whom it seems impossible for them to believe in the Lord? Why not pray for them by name right now to say to God that you believe He is able to do the impossible?
