9 “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks, receives; and he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, it will be opened. 11 Now suppose one of you fathers is asked by his son for a fish; he will not give him a snake instead of a fish, will he? 12 Or if he is asked for an egg, he will not give him a scorpion, will he? 13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?” // Luke 11:9-13
A lot of the Lord’s teaching on prayer emphasizes persistence and repetition. Why is that? One reason is that praying many times about something draws us closer to God than if He provided His response quickly. Going to the Lord over and over with a prayer request deepens our relationship with Him rather than going to him like a vending machine. This text also reminds us that God has a heart to give us good things. Sometimes, the good thing is not exactly what we thought it would be, but we can trust that He will always give us what He knows is best like a good father does. And what is the best thing He gives? In verse 13, He tells us that the Holy Spirit is the ultimate gift He gives! When you repent of sin and turn to Jesus for forgiveness (become a believer in Christ), God causes you to be born again, and the Holy Spirit comes to live inside you forever! And then, daily we seek to be full of and controlled by the Spirit of God. That is the good life!
- Pray again right now for some of the things for which you may have stopped asking by seeking and knocking in prayer.
- Thank God that He is the very best Father, and thank Him that He gives us what He knows is best.
- Ask God that you will be full of the Holy Spirit.
- Ask Him that our church will be full of the Holy Spirit.
